The Hertfordshire village of Chorleywood, in the Three Rivers district of the county, lies on the border with Buckinghamshire. It is just 20 miles north west of Charing Cross and, at one time, was part of the parish of Rickmansworth. In the middle of the 19th century racing was held in the village under the direction of the Old Berkeley Hunt committee whose hounds were kennelled nearby. The first meeting took place in 1865 on fields owned by Mr J H Barnes, and at the follow-up meeting on Friday 19th January 1865 there was a 6 race card which opened with a match in which Hungerford, owned by Captain Grosvenor, scored a hollow victory at 2/1 ON over Lord Malden’s Queen Bess. The meeting was well supported by the landed gentry and races continued for the next 3 years until Friday 19th March 1869. |
